Just Voices Brings World-class Writers to CCSD Schools

Liz SpaldingMarilyn McKinneyC&I faculty (Marilyn McKinney, Liz Spalding) and the Southern Nevada Writing Project (SNWP) (Rosemary Holmes-Gull) are partnering with the Nevada Partners in Inclusive Education, UNLV's English Department, and the Regional Professional Development Center to offer an innovative program for CCSD high school teachers and students. Just Voices brings world-class writers from around the world to local schools to share their stories and interact with students, thus aiming to raise curiosity and interest in literature and increase motivation and skills in writing.

This curriculum helps students find their own voices as writers by providing opportunities for them to see that effective writing skills can be a powerful tool toward making a positive impact on the world. The authors who will be visiting schools in April include Gerda Weissmann Klein, Holocaust survivor and author of All But My Life (April 9-11), Ana Castillo, one of the leading voices to emerge from the Chicana experience and author of The Guardians (April 14-18), and Dan Chaon, author of the short story collection, Fitting Ends, that focuses on issues of justice and tolerance within the structure of the family (April 21-25).
