Karen Grove invited to "ICT in Initial Teacher Training" meeting in Paris
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has invited Dr. Karen Grove to join the opening meeting October 29-30 in Paris to participate in research plans for a one-year international project to map the technology integration in initial teacher training. The research project is part of OECD's Centre for Educational Research and Innovation's (CERI) New Millenium Learners Project. CERI has established an international reputation for pioneering educational research, opening up new fields for exploration and combining rigorous analysis with conceptual innovation.
International Conference on Sociocultural Theory has Strong Department Representation
Professor Steve McCafferty, former C&I doctoral students Ana Christina DaSilva Iddings and John Haught; and current doctoral students Natalie Hudson, Ilaria Nardotto Peltier, and Alessandro Rosborough presented their research recently at ISCAR, the International Conference on Sociocultural Theory, held at the University of California, San Diego.
Giorgis Appointed to NCTE Standing Committee

Cyndi Giorgis was recently appointed to serve as a member of the Standing Committee Against Censorship for the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Her three-year term will begin after the 2008 Annual Convention scheduled for November 20-25, in San Antonio.
The Standing Committee Against Censorship's charge is to solicit and receive reports of censorship incidents from NCTE members, constituent groups, and sources outside the Council; to serve as a resource on current patterns of censorship; supporting the anti-censorship service office at headquarters; to develop written guidelines for students' Right to Write, including advice for schools dealing with situations in which student writing is taken as threatening to the safety of other students, where freedom of expression must be weighed against individual or school security; to develop a written position on whether the narrowing of the curriculum that occurs in response to high-stakes testing can be understood as censorship.

Jane McCarthy is Appointed a Director in New International Association
Professor Jane McCarthy was recently appointed as a director in the new World Federation of Associations of Teacher Education. This is an exciting organization that will strive to encourage the development of teacher education in developing countries and to serve as a vehicle for collaboration and professional development in teacher education around the world. Dr. McCarthy will serve as a representative of the United States Association of Teacher Educators (ATE).
Improving Math and Science Achievement through Professional Development
The Nevada Math and Science Leadership Cadre brings together math and science teachers from across the state to receive professional development in their content areas and be trained to eventually provide additional professional development to their hometown colleagues with the intention of improving math and science achievement. This is a collaboration between UNLV's Janelle Bailey (PI) and partners Lincoln County School District, University of Nevada, Reno, the Southern Nevada Regional Professional Development Program, the Southern Nevada Mathematics Council, Southern Nevada Science Teachers Association, and the Nevada State Science Teachers Association.
