Biography: Sandra Odell is a professor of teacher education and Chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She joined the UNLV faculty in 1996. Prior to that she was Professor and Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies at Western Michigan University and on the faculty at the University of New Mexico. She has maintained a career-long research interest in teacher development, teacher induction, and mentoring in the context of collaborative university/school district programs. Dr. Odell has published the book, Mentor Teacher Programs, chapters in several monographs and books, as well as many journal articles on the topics of teacher induction and mentoring. She will be a Senior Editor for the Journal of Teacher Education with Drs. Brown, Spalding, Wang, Klecka, and Lin from UNLV beginning in June, 2008. She has served on the Advisory Panel for the Mathematica, Inc. ten million dollar Office of Education Study on the impact of intensive teacher induction in America's schools and on NCATE's Teacher Residency Programs Advisory Panel. She has served on the Association of Teacher Education (ATE) National Commissions on Teacher Induction and the Role and Preparation of Mentor Teachers. She also co-chaired the National Commission on Novice Teacher Support, and currently chairs the National Commissin on Mentoring and Induction and co-chairs the ATE Teacher Induction Special Interest Group. The first three ATE Yearbooks were co-edited by Dr. Odell, and she co-edited Quality Mentoring for Novice Teachers. Dr. Odell was the recipient of the 1999 National Distinguished Teacher Educator award from ATE and Wadsworth Publishing Company. She has published recent articles in the Journal of Teacher Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Review of Educational Research, Teachers College Record, and the Elementary School Journal.
