Student Teaching Opportunities in China, Spring 2010
Dear Senior Undergraduate or Graduate Students in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction:
We are inviting undergraduate students in their senior year and graduate students who will be enrolling in their student teaching during Spring 2010, to participate in an international teaching and travel experience. You are being invited to student teach during Spring, 2010, in one of the major cosmopolitan cities in China: Shenzhen.
Program Location
The host school is situated in Shenzhen, China, which is in the southern region of China's Guangdong Province. Shenzhen closely neighbors Hong Kong and boasts a rich history of ancient pagodas mixed with fast-paced modern cosmopolitan development that is considered one of the commercial gateways to the world. More than 10 million people from all over China and the world live in this modernized city bristling with skyscrapers and shopping malls.
This student teaching experience will allow you to work with Chinese students, teachers, and school administrators from the host school, Shenzhen Foreign Language School (K-12) from January to June, 2010. This experience with Chinese school students, teachers, and administrators will provide the opportunities to observe, experience, and reflect on the issues related to the impact of globalization and multicultural societies on schools, teachers, and students.
Program Description
The international student teaching program is collaboratively organized by the Chinese school principal and Drs. Jian Wang and Emily Lin, faculty of teacher education from the UNLV's Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
The host school has a very extensive and respectable history of established cooperative relationships with teachers and researchers from a wide range of universities and academic institutions in such countries as the US, Australia, England, and the regions like Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. One of its institutional interests and established reputation is in English teaching and research.
If you are selected, you will be working within the host school faculty, staff and administrators to instruct Chinese students in English. We are seeking student teachers in all subject areas from K-12 level. Working with the host school personnel and UNLV supervisors, you will prepare and implement instructional curriculum and activities in the host school following the host school's fall schedule and calendar. Supervision of your student teaching experience will be conducted by both an assigned UNLV and host school supervisor.
The host school has agreed to cover the following expenses for your involvement in this student teaching opportunity: one round trip flight from US to Shenzhen, China; breakfast and lunch meals per day, accommodations in either the host families or school apartment/hotel room, office space with internet access, and two hours per week of Chinese lessons. In addition, student teachers will receive 2,000 RMB (approximately, $260 USD per working month).
You will be responsible for any personal expenses as well as any expenses incurred for getting passport authorizations, additional visas for overstays, and any additional travel expenses in China after the conclusion of the program. You are also required to buy the mandatory medical insurance (Approximately $25-30 per week) which is in accordance with the University International Program policies. This will assist you with any unforeseen illness that may arise during the program. Please note that the above terms and conditions are subject to change without notice due to the circumstances of the sponsoring Chinese school.
